If the file doesn&#8217;t get there, we have two paths: <strong>resample<\/strong> or <strong>upscale with AI.<\/strong> <strong>Resampling<\/strong> creates new pixels by interpolating existing ones: it is predictable and clean, ideal for moderate upscaling.<strong>Upscaling with AI<\/strong> tries to reconstruct micro-details to hold higher magnifications, but it must be used judiciously because it can introduce artifacts. The choice depends on the <strong>starting quality<\/strong> and the<strong>printing objective<\/strong>: in the sections below we see when one suits, when the other, and how to apply them correctly in Photoshop.    <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First thing: check how &#8220;big&#8221; your file is<\/h2>\n\n<p>In <strong>Photoshop \u2192 Image \u2192 Image Size<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sets the <strong>final cm<\/strong> of the print.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If <strong>Resample<\/strong> is <strong>off<\/strong>, see how many ppi you get to <strong>without creating pixels<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;re at least <strong>300 ppi<\/strong> or <strong>very close to<\/strong> it, that&#8217;s fine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If that&#8217;s not enough, <strong>turn on Resample-you<\/strong> are now <strong>creating new pixels<\/strong> to achieve 300 ppi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Resampling creates pixels &#8220;in between&#8221; existing ones. This is done differently depending on the type of method chosen. <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#fff2cd\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Resampling methods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Open <strong>Image Size \u2192 Resample<\/strong> and choose the algorithm (method).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nutshell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preserve Details 2.0<\/strong> (recommended for magnification)<br\/>Advanced algorithm that <strong>preserves edges<\/strong> and limits halos. Has a Noise <strong>Reduction<\/strong> slider: useful because noise increases with magnification. <br\/><em>Pros:<\/em> sharp and controllable. <em>Cons:<\/em> If pushed too hard it can harden micro-texture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bicubic <strong>softer (for enlargement)<\/strong><br\/>Bicubic interpolation with some <strong>softening<\/strong> to avoid scalping.<br\/><em>Pros:<\/em> predictable. <em>Cons:<\/em> often requires <strong>sharpening<\/strong> decided afterwards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bicubica<\/strong><br\/>&#8220;Pure&#8221; Bicubica: compromise between softness and detail.<br\/><em>Use:<\/em> okay for small steps, now surpassed by Preserve Details 2.0.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bilinear<\/strong><br\/>Simple, <strong>smooth<\/strong> calculation.<br\/><em>Use:<\/em> almost never on photos (superior methods better).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nearest Neighbor (Nearest Neighbor)<\/strong><br\/>Does not interpolate, <strong>duplicate pixels<\/strong>.<br\/><em>Usage:<\/em> <strong>pixel-art, masks, block graphics<\/strong>, <strong>not<\/strong> photography.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: <strong>Bicubic sharper (for reduction)<\/strong> is used when <strong>shrinking<\/strong>, not when enlarging.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Resampling vs Upscale with AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>upscale with AI<\/strong> we mean a magnification in which an artificial intelligence model trained on many images <strong>predicts and reconstructs<\/strong> missing details and textures, instead of just interpolating pixels. It works well for <strong>major<\/strong> augmentations because it preserves edges and micro-contrast, but it can also <strong>invent patterns<\/strong> or introduce artifacts-it should always be 100% controlled. In addition to Photoshop\/Camera Raw (Super Resolution), there are <strong>online services<\/strong> that do the same job directly from the browser; they are convenient for quick proofs, but for fine-art printing the final quality, possible <strong>compression<\/strong>, and <strong>privacy<\/strong> of the files must be evaluated.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tools are available within Photoshop and Lightroom to do upscaling: they are called <strong>Super Resolution<\/strong> or <strong>Super Zoom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Online there are services such as <strong>AI Image Upscaler<\/strong> or software such as <strong>Gigapixel<\/strong>. Some promise &#8220;miraculous&#8221; results, but in comparison with the original they can deviate greatly, defeating the purpose of the enlargement. Quality varies widely among solutions: listing them all makes little sense, given how quickly AI evolves.  <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To recap:<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-white-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Resampling (classic)<\/strong><br\/>Photoshop creates pixels &#8220;in between&#8221; existing ones. It is clean and predictable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pros: does not invent strange details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pros: viewable preview to choose the best method.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pros: available within Photoshop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cons: Over +50% can be a bit soft.<br\/><strong>How to do it:<\/strong> Image size \u2192 check <strong>Resample<\/strong> \u2192 <strong>choose the method that best suits your image<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>Upscale with AI (Super Resolution \/ Enhance)<\/strong><br\/>A model &#8220;guesses&#8221; textures and micro-details to hold up to higher magnifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pros: great when you have to go up a <strong>lot<\/strong> (old scans, smartphone files).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pros: can achieve amazing results even with very low quality files.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cons: Sometimes creates <strong>artifacts<\/strong> (skin, skies, patterns). Needs to be checked. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cons: The image is partially reworked and may not reflect the true initial details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cons: May require external paid tools (with possible privacy issues).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;Physical&#8221; limits to be met<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Focus &amp; blur<\/strong>: Upscaling does not create sharpness where there is none. Better to reduce the print size slightly than to transform the file. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Noise\/Compression<\/strong>: noise is more noticeable when you upscale; JPEG blocks become obvious.
